Sublimation: Advanced
Sublimation: Basics
- Q. I want to print light colours onto dark garments - what other systems are available?
- A. Assuming you want to print white lettering onto a black T-shirt then sublimation is not the way forward. To do this you would need to consider using either flock (a material that has a slightly raised soft feel to it) or flex (a smooth material) or other type of materials that can be cut using a cutter (a printer that uses a blade instead of an ink cartridge) to cut out the shape of the letters or image. This is then applied onto the garment with a heat press. Flock is a fabric that
has a brushed finish so you can feel the softness of it when it is adhered to the garment, whereas other materials, such as flex, will lie flat on the garment and would be smooth to the touch. These materials are washable, ironable and permanent when applied to the garments and can be applied to 100% cotton garments as well as other blends of material.
A cutter to start you off on this process will start at £179.95 +vat and we also supply flex and flock in various colours as well as a printable flex which enables you to print full colour onto dark garments. There is also a Pro version of this cutter now available at £695 +vat which
cuts up to 400mm wide. Special offers of these cutter are available from time to time on our website at www.printerowners.co.uk - Q. What do I need to get started in the sublimation printing business?
- A. You will need an Epson printer, a set of sublimation filled cartridges (or a bulk feed system if you are likely to be printing a lot), some dye sublimation paper, a roll of heat tape and either a flat bed press and/or a mug press. A flat bed press is used for printing flat items such as mouse mats, jigsaws, key rings, coasters etc. and they come in various sizes from A4 size heat area (210mm x 300mm) to our large press (400mm x 600mm). A mug press, as the name suggests is just for mugs and is designed to wrap around the mug - this will also do our water bottles.
Full details of our presses are available online. We also now stock baseball cap presses and plate/ tile presses. If you are looking for a complete business package with everything included then check out our business startup packages.
Please note that the ink cartridges supplied by Epson do not contain sublimation ink. Sublimation ink is a specialist ink and therefore is not available from Epson. - Q. Which printers are supported for sublimation printing for 2008?
- A. The current situation is as follows:
Epson D120 which is an A4 printer using 5 colours of ink (2x black and cyan, magenta and yellow).
Epson Photo 1400 A3.
Epson 4450 A2. No solution currently available
Epson 4880. Refillable cartridges now available - Q. Price rises affecting UniSub products...
- A. Due to a weakening of Sterling against Euro all prices of Unisub products have experienced a price rise. The £/€ rate has fallen from around €1.45 to £1 to as low as €1.20 to £1 recently. This is an effective price rise of 20% and we have had to increase prices to offset this poor exchange rate. As soon as we can reverse the price rises we will do so.
