Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do I disable the ink status monitor on the Canon printer so that I can refill the cartridge and continue printing?

The Canon printers using the PGI5 and CLI8 cartridges can be refilled reasonably easily but as there is a chip on the cartridge you either need to reset this with a special reset tool or disable the ink status monitor on the printer itself.

A Google search on "disabling Canon ink status monitors" will return a number of sites showing you how this is done and the link at the end of this FAQ takes you to one which includes various screen pictures of the process.

The principle is that when the Canon printer tells you that a cartridge has come to the end of its life and needs replacing you are presented with some ink cartridge change screens on your computer. You should say Yes to the screens that ask if you want to continue printing even though the ink has been used. Canon will warn you about how printing with no ink can damage your printer, but as you are refilling the cartridge then this is okay. So say Yes to these screens (you should be presented with 3 in total and the final one showing the replacement ink cartridge will have an OK. Do not click on Cancel Printing on this final screen, but press OK.

FINALLY, and this stage is important, press and hold the PAPER FEED button on the printer for at least 5 seconds. A new screen should appear on your computer. Click SAVE on this final screen and you can continue to print without being reminded that the cartridge is empty.

Please ensure you manually monitor your ink levels to avoid the cartridge running low or out of ink.

  • Which printer do you recommend for Edible Printing?

We've tried to make your decision as straight forward as possible.

All the printers we supply will print the same quality so there is no difference in that respect.

The ip4850 Canon printer is a standard A4 printer so if you looking just to print onto edible papers then this printer is fine and is our most popular printer for edible ink printing.

The other A4 Canon printers we support are multifunction printers and these will print, but also enable you to photocopy a picture, scan a picture to your computer, read digital images directly from a camera memory card on the printer (via the small colour TFT screen) and is also wireless. The wireless multifunction printer can be used without the need for a computer if you just want to photocopy and read memory cards from customers.

The other printer we offer is an A3 Canon printer, but currently we do not offer A3 sized edible papers.

  • I want to print circles, but you only sell A4 sized sheets. How can I do this?

It is possible to buy an A4 sheet made up of pre-cut circles, say 1 large circle or 12 small circles on 1 sheet. We don't believe it is necessary to stock these combinations as you can achieve the same results with a full A4 sheet.

The potential problem with a circular piece of edible paper (on an A4 backing sheet) is that you may mis-align the paper going into the print and then the picture isn't perfectly centred on the circle. If you print onto the full A4 sheet and then lay a circular dish over the top you can cut around this to give a perfect circle with the image centred correctly.
